DIY Egg Carton Butterflies

Let your creativity take flight!

When you can't get to the park for a family picnic or venture outside to fly a kite because the forecast isn't in your favor, it's time to have some fun at home. Being stuck indoors on a stormy day is the perfect opportunity for kids to use their imaginations, tap into their creativity, and learn the value of upcycling materials that they already have access to at home in order to create something completely new. Sound familiar? That's exactly what caterpillars do, weaving a cocoon and eventually emerging as a beautiful butterfly.

DIY upcycled egg carton butterflies

To make your own DIY egg carton butterflies, grab an empty earth-friendly Nellie's Free Range Egg carton or two from the recycling bin. Since they have a handy dandy double lid to protect the eggs from jostling around, each 12-count Nellie's Free Range Egg carton can be made into a total of 6 butterflies. With just a few other supplies, you'll have everything you need to start crafting.

Supplies:

  • Nellie's Free Range Egg cartons
  • Acrylic paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Small reusable cups
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors

Directions:

  • Cut egg carton cups into thirds, creating 6 butterflies each made from 4 egg cups.
  • Carefully trim and round off the edges of the egg cups using your scissors.
  • Paint all four egg cups using acrylic paint in the colors of your choice. Let dry completely.
  • Fold a pipe cleaner in half and wrap around the butterfly. Twist at the top to create the antennas, and your butterfly is ready!

These DIY butterflies make adorable gifts, or can be added to your garden, propped up next to house plants, or used as decoration in the kids' bedrooms. The sky's the limit when you spread your wings like a butterfly!
